In The 1970's - A Seed is Planted in Childhood
For most of my childhood, at least the best part, I was raised by a single mom. A fantastic and supportive mother that raised three kids on a tight budget. The standing joke is that she freezes everything, she would make a large tuna casserole and freeze it in 4 different Tupperware bowls and somehow get 6 meals out of it. She was always finding things in our freezer that she had forgot about, sometimes months or even years later.
I can't remember ever having fresh rolls, she would buy them, freeze them and thaw them out when she wanted to use them. If the rolls were badly cracked with freezer burn she would break out her bun steamer. A light weight dome shaped cooper colored kind of pot. She would put a little water in the false bottom and place the buns on the inner insert, then she would cover and place on the stove top for a few minutes. She would put the nastiest freezer burned buns in this thing a few minutes later the warmest softest kid friendly buns came out. It didn't matter what she put in they all came out the same, bakery fresh! To a kid it was like watching a magic show, except it wasn't a rabbit that came out of a hat, it was the freshest tasting rejuvenated buns you ever ate that came out of my mom's bun steamer.
I never forgot how much better steaming buns and rolls made them taste!
Thanks Mom and Happy 65th Birthday 07/07/2009
